ABSTRACT:
AI-based Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS) are redefining the global security landscape and marking the beginning of a new era in military technology. These systems, characterized by high precision, rapid decision-making, and the ability to operate without direct human control, have the potential to enhance combat effectiveness and reduce human casualties on the battlefield. However, delegating life-and-death decisions to machines introduces serious ethical, legal, and strategic challenges. The absence of human judgment in lethal operations raises concerns regarding compliance with international humanitarian law, accountability, and the potential for unintended or indiscriminate harm. Moreover, the rapid proliferation of AWS may lower the threshold for armed conflict and intensify the global arms race, thereby destabilizing geopolitical balance and eroding trust among nations.
To mitigate these risks, it is imperative to establish robust international governance mechanisms that ensure transparency, meaningful human control, and adherence to ethical standards. Rather than seeking to halt technological advancement, the international community must develop comprehensive legal and regulatory frameworks that guide the responsible integration of AWS into military operations. This study concludes that the future of global security depends not merely on technological superiority but on humanity’s collective ability to align innovation with ethical responsibility and international stability.
